Norm has been practicing civil litigation in Calgary for over 40 years, with an emphasis on oil and gas, product liability, insurance, employment and personal injury matters. He has also acted before regulatory tribunals including the AEUB (ERCB) and the National Energy Board. Norm has argued and appeared before all levels of the Alberta Courts, the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada. After completing his Articles in 1979, Norm became a Partner at Code Hunter in 1981. In 1989, he started up his own firm, Machida Mack Shewchuk, and practiced exclusively in civil litigation. In 2006, Norm was appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Government of Alberta.
Norm has been a significant contributor to the legal profession through his interaction and involvement with members of the Bar and the Court. Early in his career, he was an instructor for the Alberta Bar Admission Course and was a guest lecturer in legal research at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. Over the years, Norm has continued to be involved in teaching and writing papers specific to civil litigation. He has presented at numerous speaking engagements for the Legal Education Society of Alberta, The Canadian Bar Association, The Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, Insight Conferences, Lexpert and the Canadian Institute. He has also acted for lawyers, engineers, accountants and physicians in respect of their professional practice before their self-governing societies.
Norm regularly volunteers his time to numerous community and legal projects. In the past he has volunteered with the Shaganappi Community Association, Trails West Hockey Association, South Calgary Ringette, Calgary Chinook Soccer, Calgary Little League baseball and the Calgary Japanese Community Association.
Norm joined Vogel LLP on a part time basis in 2014, acting as Counsel on complicated civil litigation, estate litigation and family law matters.
